The Newmarket Hawks started the Hap Walters Tournament off on the right foot with a 5-4 victory over the Ivy Leafs. Victor Simon got the start for the Hawks while Todd Gowan took the mound for the Leafs.
The Hawks have added another game to their "Games to Makeup due to Rain" List. At around 4:00 pm on Tuesday evening, a massive storm front moved in from Shelburne and beyond. It placed a large amount of water on McKnight Field causing Mark West to call the boys and tell them to stay home, put the kids to bed and watch the Jays take on the Yankees. The Hawks resume action Thursday night against the Bolton Brewers in a rare Thursday night home game. Game time is 7:30 pm at the Fairgrounds.

Though it got close at the end, the Newmarket Hawks held on for a 5-4 victory on Tuesday evening against the Pickering Red Sox. Ryan Fedrigo took the hill for the Hawks, picking up the win by going six strong innings, allowing just five hits and one run while striking out three. The Hawks were led at the plate by centerfielder Kevin Holloway, who went 1-5 with two runs and three stolen bases out of the leadoff spot.
Austen Jones and Alex Bruce provided the relief needed to hold on to the win, going a combined three innings while allowing three runs with Bruce picking up his first save of the season.
The Hawks are back in action at Bishop’s Cross Park in Thornhill to play the Reds on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
With the Hawks first two scheduled games of the season rained out, the Hawks played their season opener last night against the Bolton Brewers. Victor Simon put forth a solid outing on the mound for the Hawks, while his counterpart Andrew White was strong for the Brewers but after 11 innings, the game was called due to a time curfew with the score stuck at 4-4. Hawks rookie, Josh Caruso picked up a couple of hits in his first game with the big club.
The Hawks return to action again tonight in Pickering against the Red Sox.
