Hawks Win Battle of the Birds

Tuesday night the Hawks welcomed the Thornhill Reds to town in the final tune up before Elims. 6 pitchers combined to limit the Reds to 6 hits on the night with Kyle McGillvray and Matt Laise working the first 4 innings. After a Troy McLaughlin RBI single in the 3rd, Alex Bruce hit a 2 run shot that put Newmarket in the lead for good. The bullpen picked up from there with Austen Jones, Brandon Clarke, CJ Dungavell and Alex Bruce all pitching in to keep the Reds bats quiet.

Hawks and 'Dogs Draw in EY

The Newmarket Hawks rolled into East York on Monday looking to build some momentum leading up to the Elims. Ryan Aida took the bump for the Hawks and worked 3 efficient innings allowing just 2 hits. Using this game as a pre-tourney warm up, the Hawks played some small ball all night and perfectly executed 2 squeeze bunts, leading to 2 runs.

Ryan Fedrigo struggled in his first of 4 innings before he settled down to retire his last 6 batters. Mark West worked a rather effortless 8th and 9th and the Hawks escaped with a 6-6 tie.

The Hawks return to the diamond Tuesday night against Thornhill for their final pre elims tuneup.

Hawks Fall Short Against Pickering

Pickering came to town Saturday night for the rare weekend league game with the Hawks. CJ Dungavell took the mound and worked 5 strong innings for the Hawks giving up a single earned run. Kevin Holloway continued to lead the attack, pacing Newmarket with 2 doubles and Junior call up Tyler Lansley belted a 2 run double that would give the hawks a 4-3 lead in the 6th. Unfortunately Pickering put up 7 runs in the 7th that the Hawks just could not overcome. With the tying run at the plate in the 9th though, Pickering managed to shut down the Hawk rally and take the game 11-7.

Newmarket returns to action Monday in East York and Tuesday at home before traveling to Windsor for the Provincial Elimination tournament on the weekend.

Hawks Drop Two At The Hap

Saturday was not as kind as Friday night to the Hawks as they scuffled to an 0 and 2 afternoon, failing to advance to the Hap Walters playoff rounds.

Game one saw Ryan Fedrigo take the bump against a super talented Burlington Junior Bulls team that went 4 and 0 in Tournament play before rain cancelled the SF and Final on Sunday. The Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 2 innings with Kevin Holloway scoring a run in each innings off a single a double and 3 more stolen bases. Shawn O'Brien and Paul Rupnik chipped in with doubles as well before the Hawks bats went quiet. The Bulls would chip away at the lead with 2 in the 4th and 2 more in the 5th off a 2 run home run. From there, the Bulls pitching kept the Hawks bats off balance and closed out the win.

Game two put Tyler Plumpton on the hill against a surging Milton Red Sox team, fresh off a Finals appearance at the Lakeside tournament 2 weeks ago. Plumpton managed to miss barrels for three innings but the Sox managed to put runs together on seeing eye singles and bleeders. A complete game 6 hit performance by Milton starter Jason Schneider put the finishing touches on the Hawks as they saw the weekend come to an early end.

The Hawks return home on Tuesday July 24th against the Martingrove Sox and a rare Saturday home game on the 28th against Pickering. Game time Saturday is 7pm.

Hawks Droppings

-Plumpton went 3-4 against Burlington raising his average to a gaudy .571 on the season

-The Hawks bullpen didn't allow an earned run in 7 1/3 innings on the weekend

Hawks Show Up Early Against Royals

The Hawks got the bats going early on Friday night and used 2 strong pitching performances to upend perennial powerhouse Strathroy to kick off COBA play. Christian Davies got the win and gutted out 5 1/3 innings against a vaunted Strathroy lineup before Ryan Fedrigo slammed the door for the final 5 outs to pick up the save.

Kevin Holloway and Paul Rupnik got it started early for the Hawks as the squad sprinted to a 2-0 lead in the first. As Davies dealt, the Hawks would push the lead to 7-2 behind timely hitting throughout the lineup. Strathroy would rally in the 6th before Fedrigo came in and calmed the tides.

The Hawks now face Burlington (2:30) and Milton. (5:00) in search of a playoff appearance at the annual "who's who in the zoo" Hap Walters tourney.
